Numbers, people and me

I just love numbers!

When I was at school my favourite subject was algebra, so I was probably the only child in the class who couldn’t wait for a double maths lesson.

I did Accounts at A Level, gaining a grade 'A' and went on to study for exams with ACCA (Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants) whilst holding down a day job. I became a part-qualified Certified Accountant over 20 years ago and I still love working (and playing) with numbers to this day.

I spent many years in a variety of roles putting into practice everything I’d learned. During my time at EDS, (later taken over by Hewlett Packard) I worked with some really big organisations including Vodafone and DWP, as well as managing the rollout of a new financial forecasting tool for the MOD.

By way of a change I also spent time teaching double-entry bookkeeping to college students and because I so enjoyed the experience, I now deliver workshops to clients of Business Sheffield for free.

The icing on the cake in most of my roles though, was that I got to work with people, because although I do love a good set of numbers, I’m no geek and I really enjoy meeting and helping people from all walks of life.

So in spring 2016, ready for a different challenge, I volunteered for redundancy and started my own freelance practice, offering services from basic bookkeeping, to payroll, management accounts and more. It felt like a pretty big step at the time, but I’m so glad I did it.

This new opportunity has given me the chance to see firsthand what’s involved in starting a business from scratch (and yes it’s hard work) but I’m loving it because it allows me to combine two of my favourite things and that’s numbers and people.

Choosing the right level of help

I don’t believe that ‘one size fits all’, so the first thing we need to do when you get in touch is to figure out what’s going to work best for you.
It might be that you have a very clear idea about what help you’re after which is fine, because I can then give you options on the best way to achieve that.
If not we’ll need to discuss your business, how comfortable you are with bookkeeping and accounts in general and how much time (if any) you have free to devote to it every month.
This will allow me to suggest something tailored to your needs and wants, that will take away the stuff you find a real hassle, free-up more time to spend on your business and give you peace of mind, whilst not costing a penny more than it has to.

Once we’re up and running

Every month I’ll gather all the relevant documentation from you and process the data, as well as doing monthly reconciliations. To give you complete peace of mind, I’ll email you to confirm when it’s done.
I’ll also show you how to access masses of financial information about your business anytime, anywhere using Quickbooks Online (exactly what you’ll be able to access will depend on how much you decide you want me to do) but it means you’re always crystal clear about where your business is at, so making the right decisions becomes far easier.

How I charge

One other thing we’ll need to decide is how you want me to charge for my services.
There are two options. Either I can work out a fixed monthly fee (that way you can budget and there are no unexpected surprises), or if you prefer I can charge by the hour for any work done.
Either way you’ll find I’m extremely conscientious and offer great value for money.


Nothing need be set in stone so as your business grows and changes over time, so can the level of help and support I provide.
Also, as and when things crop up that you could use a helping hand with, you only have to let me know and of course anytime you have any questions, or you’re not one hundred per cent sure what to do, I’m only ever a phone call or email away.
